Job Description:

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (located in Wise, Virginia) seeks applications for an Academic Systems Specialist in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. This is a full-time, salaried position which includes an excellent benefits package. The successful candidate will provide management and support of various departmental assets, and assist the Department’s Systems Administrator with Windows and Linux desktop and server maintenance and troubleshooting. Primary responsibilities include: maintaining the department's web page(s); maintaining the department's Moodle server and other servers; managing the department's “Maker Space” (3D printing and laser cutting); evaluating and developing software applications as needed; and assisting members (faculty and students) of the department with computer-related research needs.  To be competitive, the candidate should have in-depth knowledge of web development with full-stack experience, have experience with database systems (both relational and non), have knowledge of content management systems, have experience with computer hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, have experience with configuring and deploying virtual machines and hypervisors, and possess excellent written and oral communication skills. 

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required. (Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.) Preference will be given to candidates who articulate a clear understanding of UVA Wise’s public liberal arts mission. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. Relevant certifications are a plus. Knowledge of electronics is a plus. Experience with cloud computing and cloud infrastructure is a plus.
