Summary This position is located within the Beneficiary Travel and Patients Funds at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, VA. The primary duties of the position involves account maintenance and a basic understanding of accounting systems, policies, and procedures in performing the examination, verification, and maintenance of accounts and accounting data. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Receives, analyzes and posts deposits into patient accounts on a daily basis. Processes all authorized/unauthorized claims for beneficiary travel. Prepares monthly reconciliation reports, prepares schedules for advance payments, reviews and approves outstanding obligations, and prepares all vouchers to transfer funds to other agencies. Advises the VA Regional Office, guardians, committees, and others of anticipated patient discharges and assists in preparing a budget of funds after patient's discharge. Controls and maintains an annual budget in multiple control points. Ensures that patient deposits to and withdrawals from accounts are verified and promptly posted. Monitors all patient accounts for appropriateness of withdrawals according to criteria established for the account. Accurately prepares and types necessary correspondence. Reviews, analyzes and responds to all telephonic, written or personal inquiries from a variety of sources concerning patient's funds and maintenance of accounts. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL, YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting practices; maintaining and verifying account withdrawals/deposits; preparing various types of correspondence; maintaining accurate financial records; and preparing various reports. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school. Additional Information Physical Requirements: Position must alternate between desks, work counter, and telephones. Periodic standing for long periods of time may be required. Over four hundred vouchers for travel pay are issued per day from this office. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
