Position Description

TheArt Education program (https://www.finearts.txst.edu/Art/academics/undergraduate/art-education/arted-program.html) in theSchool of Art and Design (https://www.finearts.txst.edu/Art/) at Texas State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice starting Fall 2023.

The selected candidate will supervise student teachers in field placements, teach undergraduate art education courses, liaise with the College of Education Office of Educator Preparation, and manage administrative operations related to art education student teaching certification.

Faculty of practice in Art Education are expected to have strong communication and organizational skills, maintain active engagement with professional organizations and networks, pursue independent creative or scholarly pursuits related to art and art education, and contribute to college, department, and/or university service.

The Assistant Professor of Practice in Art Education is a full-time, non-tenure line faculty position that is eligible for promotion. All positions are subject to availability of funds.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in art education; or a Master’s degree in a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in art education subject areas, from an accredited college or university; or a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in art education, or in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) with specialization in art education.

  • At least five years teaching experience teaching art or design in K-12 public or private schools, or in higher education.

  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and/or supervising student teachers, intern teachers, and/or apprentice teachers.

  • Teacher certification in art, All-Level, K-12, (unless the candidate has an earned terminal degree in art, art education, or in C&I with specialization in art education).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art education theories and practices.

  • Commitment to EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Access).

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree: MFA , Ph.D. or Ed.D. in art education or a closely related field from an accredited university.

  • Higher education teaching experience, or experience as an art or design teacher or administrator in K-12 public or private schools beyond five years.

  • Significant professional accomplishments in K-12 or higher education art education, and/or professional or personal art making practice.

  • Strong technical skills in computer enhanced instructional methods, including online instruction and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, which is Texas State University’s official LMS ).

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional learning in and about socially responsive approaches to art, culture, and society.
