San Diego State University is seeking an energetic and dedicated professional to serve as the CARES Coordinator for the Campus Assistance, Response, Engagement & Support (CARES) unit within the division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. The CARES Coordinator will be charged with addressing the needs of students who have challenges or are facing distress in areas such as academics, health, psychological, economic, family relationships and social adjustments through a variety of interventions, referrals and follow up services. Responsibilities will include needs assessment, case management, and collaboration and consultation with various departments, health care providers, parents, and colleagues across campus.
Under the direction of the CARES Director, the CARES Coordinator is primarily responsible for addressing student concerns both in and out of the classroom, to help create a campus environment in which students can be successful. The responsibilities are extensive in scope, as the primary focus of this position is to serve and support all students. This position was created as a result of the University's increased efforts to improve student retention and persistence at SDSU, while creating a campus community dedicated to student success. This position exists to coordinate the campus' response to students experiencing varying degrees of distress.
SDSU CARES is a unit that provides institutional responses to care for students and the overall SDSU community. The CARES Program provides advocacy and support services that will increase student engagement, success, retention/persistence, and graduation. The CARES team will meet with students who experience challenges that may interfere with their academic pursuits.

Full-time, benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications and Google applications
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, social work, higher education, student affairs or job related field.
- Experience advising and/or counseling underrepresented, low-income and first generation college students and working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience working with college students, parents, and families.
- Experience conducting presentations in small and large group settings: facilitating workshops using effective public speaking techniques.
- Experience advising and/or counseling students in academic and/or co-curricular settings.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,691 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University system wide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
