What you will do

The R&D Design Engineer designs, validates and brings new products to market. Specifies precise new product functional requirements; designs, tests and integrates components to produce final designs; and evaluates the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability and safety. Designs, develops, executes and evaluates fitness-for-use testing, product specification, design verification and validation plans; creates and reviews material part specifications and bills of materials. Collaborates with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, component manufacturer’s and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability. Utilizes CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs, produce detailed engineering drawings and simulate expected mechanical properties and failure conditions of components and assemblies.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Under supervision, design, develop, modify, and verify components for medical devices.

  • Assist with prototyping and bench testing.

  • Support problem solving, root cause analysis, identify potential solutions, and evaluate them against requirements.

  • Under supervision, conduct research and studies to support product design.

Business Responsibilities:

  • Interpret customer needs and understands design inputs.

  • Understand the product’s intended use and clinical procedures.

Medical Device Compliance:

  • Understand fundamental industry standards, design requirements and test strategies which align with regulatory requirements.

  • With supervision, create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file per company design control procedures.

  • Learn R&D procedures like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.

General Responsibilities:

  • With supervision, work with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success.

  • Learn procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required.

  • Work on problems in limited scope; purposefully learn while gaining experience.

  • Demonstrate ownership and integrity of work.

  • Build stable relationships.

  • Contribute to the project as a collaborative team member.

  • Able to communicate effectively to both engineering and cross functional stakeholders.

What you need

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical, Biomedical, Materials Science, Robotics, Electrical, Industrial Engineering or related required

  • 0+ years of work experience, internships strongly preferred

  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of engineering practices and tools and of design principles within a regulated environment preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of design and concept generation CAD or CAE modeling tools preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of analytical tools and statistical methods preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods preferred.
