As the Director of the OptumRx Strategic Proposal Development team, you will be a vital factor in our sales and client retention success as you apply your exceptional strategic writing skills in the development of compelling and persuasive customer-focused value stories in Request for Proposals (RFPs). You and your team will partner with Sales and Account Management to ensure competitive strategy, value stories and customer-focused win themes are clearly articulated throughout the proposal.

This includes value story development, executive summaries and new or highly customized responses as well as RFP content for new products and services. You will have the satisfaction of seeing your storytelling skills come to life while working in close partnership and collaboration with Sales, Account Management, Marketing, Product and Executive Leadership, in addition to working across Optum enterprise and UHC, UMR as needed to combine multiple solutions into a creative and cohesive offering.

Candidates must be able to work within a fast-paced, deadline-driven, complex environment in which close collaboration and continuous communication are critical. This position supports Commercial, Public Sector, Health Plan, Coalition, Health Systems, Labor & Trust, Medicaid, Medicare and EGWP markets.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with areas of the business who are launching new products or services to bring the value proposition to life in an RFP. This requires a high degree of collaboration and investigative journalism
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and other proposal department personnel to write strategic responses
  • Interview client facing teams and subject matter experts to develop strategic messaging and articulate the proposed solution within the RFP response
  • Perform research using all resources, including an extensive database of proposal content and customize proposal responses as needed to: a) answer the question directly and thoroughly b) reflect the proposed service solution c) persuade the customer that our products and solutions solve their specific problems and challenges
  • Develop and write strategic executive summaries clearly articulating sales strategy, value propositions and customer-focused win themes
  • Collaborate with database content managers to develop new or update/edit existing RFP database content
  • Conduct end-to-end strategic proposal reviews to make sure all responses reflect the sales strategy and ensure the customer-specific value story is woven throughout our proposals reflecting One Voice
  • Adhere to quality principles (responsive, accurate, concise, strategic), style guide, and other criteria for compelling and consistent messaging
  • Adhere to established proposal processes and defined roles and responsibilities throughout proposal development
  • Contribute to proposed development and implementation of process updates, improvements and writing models
  • Develop innovative approaches for achieving positive outcomes and driving proposals to completion within the deadline requirements
  • Manage multiple projects with a sensitivity to tight deadlines and to working in a collaborative group environment

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field or equivalent experience or equivalent related experience
  • 10+ years of proposal writing experience
  • 10+ years of strategic writing in a business development, sales support and/or marketing
  • Experience leading or mentoring teams and providing oversight to improve strategic and persuasive writing skills and represent the team for building industry knowledge
  • Experience creating successful client messaging and articulating strategy in sales support materials, such as executive summaries, cover letters, RFP responses, and proactive proposals
  • Experience leading strategic discussions
  • Experience navigating the organization to ensure completion/resolution of solutions and value proof points
  • Experience managing multiple deliverables and prioritizing work accordingly
  • Experience using analytical and critical thinking in solving problems
  • Experience working as part of a team to complete complex and time-sensitive projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interviewing stakeholders and writing strategic responses and new content
  • Experience in a sales support role or working closely with Sales to develop customer-specific value stories
  • Experience in healthcare
  • Experience in pharmacy-related writing or product experience
  • Experience working in Microsoft Teams
  • Knowledge of prescription benefit, medical, behavioral health and other healthcare related products and services

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only:
The salary range for Colorado residents is $113,500 to $218,100. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $113,500 to $218,100. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
