As the leader of the US Patient Advocacy & Engagement team, you will report to US Oncology BU Head and work with the US Oncology leadership team and the Global Patient Value & Access leadership team.
How you will contribute:
You will lead, shape and implement the Global and US Oncology Patient Advocacy mission, vision, and strategy; enable and embed that strategy within the disease areas and OBU regions and countries.
You will guide the OBU Patient Advocacy (PA) regional and Country (LOC) leads to promote a shared vision to improve patient outcomes and patient experience, in partnership with the global patient community. In particular, elevating Takeda's reputation as a science-based company committed to the best interests of people living with cancer. The Head of Patient Advocacy & Engagement will communicate and work with the internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams, including medical affairs, Global Evidence & Outcomes (GEO), PVPA, Communications, Regulatory, Policy, and Insights and Analytics to instill the patient voice, to gather patient insights, illuminate disparities that support decision-making related to regulatory and access policy advocacy.
You will will lead US OBU Patient Advocacy & Engagement team responsible for establishing and promoting partnerships with the patient advocacy community to develop and execute strategies and programs that accelerate sustainable access and eliminate barriers to Takeda's new medicines and services . You will be responsible of developing and enhancing the capabilities and skillsets in the PAE team. The leader will also make sure the succession planning for the PAE function and develop our talents to provide a sustainable candidate pipeline.
You will be the primary contact and relationship manager for U.S and global broad cancer organizations; i.e. CancerCare, American Cancer Society, UICC
Develop the strategy for patient advocacy in collaboration with important company partners and support regional and LOC execution of global strategy:
o Frame global strategy. Identify strategic opportunities to integrate advocates' knowledge, experience, and preferences into the pipeline to improve development, regulatory, and commercial decision-making. Evaluate, provide input, and make recommendations for sponsorships, grants and donation investments. Develop a landscape assessment and Takeda prioritization of relevant Global Oncology patient advocacy partners. Develop tools to support regional and LOC execution. Champion best practices and case studies to upskill capabilities at the region and LOC PA level.
o Develop through the team the US OBU strategies and programs which ensure knowledge, experience and preferences of patients, care-givers, advocates and medical association and professional society leaders. Provide counsel and direction as a member of the US OBU Leadership Team. Identify our needs for external engagement. Match partner group interest, capacity and effect. Create strategic plans for priority partners. Be the primary contact and relationship manager for select priority groups and their leaders. Ensure appropriate management of relationships with other groups by team members and by diverse team members. Identify new opportunities that address common concerns. Align budgets with priorities.
Identify external partners' perspectives on unmet medical need, value demonstration and treatment advocacy. Design new offerings, e.g., patient-friendly clinical trial awareness, publication strategy, GOR engagement. Build professional relations plan, e.g., operating plan and differentiation. Develop signature programs.
Develop advocacy business/launch plan and participate in the business planning process including potential launches of new products.
Create strategic and tactical plans for priority patient organizations. Be the primary contact and relationship manager for priority patient organizations and their leaders with relevant Takeda partners.
Lead coordination with policy and patient advocacy within and outside of the Global OBU. Recognize and consider relationships held by Takeda colleagues outside the OBU and develop strategies accordingly.
Educate and engage company partners to understand and amplify impact of partnerships with global patient organizations in a respectful and compliant fashion.
Help advance company reputation as patient-focused and based in PTRB. Work with Ethics and Compliance and Legal to develop policies, position statements, SOPs. on patient engagement and necessary.
Lead efforts to create and communicate white papers, policy statements, forums and other tools that promote patients' needs and preferences in cancer policy. Ensure appropriate attention and action that fosters access to innovation, including marketed and pipeline medicines.
Remain up to date with new developments in patient advocacy related trends that have an impact on the function
Train and counsel company partners to understand and use business benefits of advocacy groups. Create ongoing system of program evaluation to ensure success is documented, metrics are understood by all members, and challenges corrected periodically. Share progress with USOBULT and other senior leaders and course correct.
Embed & role model Takeda values and Leadership Behaviors, set the tone for team culture and develop a collaborative way of working. Foster open communication, invite feedback and lead through personal examples. Provide frequent mentoring to PAE team to promote development, retention and succession .
BS/BA degree (Master's preferred) with 15 years in the pharmaceutical, biotech, device or diagnostic industry, including 5+ years in advocacy relations
Experience and expert knowledge in the following areas; Patient advocacy, Public relations, Government relations, Public policy and Drug development, Public health
Understanding of the needs of people living with cancer
Experience working in a global organization that requires a high level of coordination and support to regional affiliates and local operating companies a plus
Successfully develop and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional stakeholders and external colleagues
Detailed knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry with an understanding of laws and regulations that impact patient advocacy
