Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is searching for a Toxicology Laboratory Technologist to join our team! The ideal candidate will perform established laboratory procedures, maintain and operate instrumentation and evaluate, interpret and report test results while meeting quality assurance parameters. Provides information and related services as needed in assigned areas of the laboratory department.
- Accurately performs moderate and high complexity laboratory analysis according to established laboratory protocols.
- Performs routine and special clinical laboratory tests in assigned sections of the clinical laboratory, utilizing automated and non-automated equipment.
- Performs general supervisory responsibilities, when qualified as defined by CLIA 88, and as assigned by the Laboratory Director.
- Assesses results with respect to controls, reviews results for accuracy, and communicates results of test performed to physicians and other authorized personnel.
- Communicates problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature both within the department and interdepartmentally.
- Analyzes and evaluates laboratory test results to determine inconsistent results and takes appropriate action.
- Maintains accurate records of tests conducted, results, data and patients tested including calculation of results from supplied data, obtained data and statistics for quality assurance. Assists with accreditation readiness activities.
- Maintains equipment in operational condition through making minor adjustments, performing scheduled maintenance, and troubleshooting major problems utilizing departmental resources and manufacturer s telephone trouble lines.
- Assists with orientation and provides instruction in basic theory, laboratory technique, instrumentation, and application of laboratory test procedures to medical residents, new scientists or technicians and students.
- Performs related duties such as obtaining blood specimens, processing specimens, and clerical activities. Assists supervisor in development of technical procedures and protocols.
- Maintains clean and efficient work area and replenishes supplies as necessary.
- Prioritizes workload to maximize efficiency while meeting patient and physician needs.
- Maintains competency by utilizing continuing education programs on new technical and theoretical procedures and keeps up to date on all policies and procedures.
- Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
- Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor s degree in Life Sciences or Medical Technology required.
- 2-4 years of toxicology experience preferred.
- Categorical certification (e.g., in toxicology, microbiology, chemistry, hematology) preferred.
- If not certified, must obtain certification within two years of hire.
- Nationally recognized certification or eligible (ASCP) as a MT(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), FA/FD/FT (ABFT), D (ABAT), or TC (NRCC).
- Must be certified within 24 months of hire, and recertify as required.
- Demonstrate knowledge of disease processes as related to patient conditions and pertinent laboratory testing performed.
- Demonstrated ability to perform simultaneous assays, calculations, interpret test results and generate accurate reports.
- Basic knowledge of accuracy, precision, normal range and correlation with existing methods including evaluation of clinical specimens for suitability for testing and presence of interfering substances.
- Possess a thorough understanding of the underlying scientific principles of laboratory testing.
- Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
- Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.
