Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Carpentry Shop is now hiring one (1) Mason, Senior. Under the general direction of the Manager, Carpentry, this position works closely with housing and the construction trades on classroom and office renovation projects as well as repairing and maintaining shower and restroom tiles, floor tiles, sandstone restoration on historic buildings, block work, flat work, and the overall general maintenance of the buildings on NAU Campus and satellite facilities.

This position is responsible for practicing clean demolition techniques, working with other trades on projects and small maintenance tasks to keep the residence halls operating. Keeping daily maintenance logs and reports on a daily time log. Report and repair maintenance issues identified throughout the day.

This position exists to aid and assist Facility Services' mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology and practicing sustainable maintenance and operations.

Work Requests and Chargeable Projects including inspections - 60%
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains masonry
  • Inspects masonry; determines repairs needed.
  • Monitors work of contractors and inspects completed jobs
  • Determines specifications and calculates required materials needed.
  • Reviews and interprets blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Provide day to day service and maintenance for the assigned buildings and develop work schedules and equipment maintenance schedules to ensure best use of resources available.
  • Answers trouble calls of various types in various buildings.
  • Ensure that OSHA and general safety regulations are maintained.

Coordinating and Communicating - 15%
  • Maintains effective communication with coworkers and other maintenance departments and all customers across campus, fostering a team relationship that allows for collaborative problem solving and process improvement.
  • May lead a crew on a jobsite, under the direction of the manager.
  • Performs calculations for estimates of work.
  • Records time and materials for customer billing.
  • Assists with day to day planning, and scheduling of projects and routine maintenance.
  • Takes an active role communicating with the pertinent trades involved in a project to ensure quality and accuracy in the completion of a project.
  • Takes part in initiating measures to improve customer service.

Equipment Maintenance and Repair - 10%
  • Uses hand and power tools as needed
  • Assists the supervisor with ensuring a sufficient inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Provide Maintenance and repair of shop equipment.
  • Assists the supervisor with ensuring a sufficient inventory of materials and supplies.

Technical Knowledge and Resource for Campus Community - 10%
  • Dedication to the development of sustainable operations and maintenance practices.
  • Determines specifications and calculates required materials needed.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from campus members regarding NAU Masonry policies
  • Organizes appropriate documentation to ensure compliance with university policies.
  • Take a proactive role in promoting and supporting Facility Services mission and vision
  • Knowledge and skills of industry best practices.
  • Actively maintain cutting edge knowledge of industry practices pertaining to higher education and continually suggest process improvements based on industry changes.

Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • 4 years of relevant masonry experience OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a higher learning institution, hospital or any other institution.
  • Experience in Carpentry Trade

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships throughout the University and Flagstaff community
  • Ability to maintain and establish departmental/university safety rules, policies and regulations related to the efficiency and safe performance of jobs performed by the Carpentry department.
  • Ability to place rebar to IBC codes for relative situations for flat work, foundations and Structural Block.
  • Ability to inspect rebar to IBC codes for slabs, columns and purlins.
  • Block laying for stem walls.
  • Knowledge and ability to read blueprints.
  • Perform plan reviews
  • Proficient in laying block in structural, and aesthetic situations.
  • Proficient in laying brick in structural, and aesthetic veneers.
  • Proficient in laying stone in structural, and aesthetic veneers
  • Knowledge of scaffold erection/safety to OSHA standards.
  • Knowledge of structural concrete, block, foundations according to IBC codes (all sections related to cementitious materials.
  • Ability to restore stone work on historic buildings.
  • Knowledge of appropriate concrete mixes for different environmental temperatures.
  • Skill in Flat work as in Sidewalks, slabs and bases
  • Form building: Curbs, flatwork, columns, plaques
  • Skill in Stone setting and inlay
  • Skill in Block laying
  • Skill with demolishing tile areas and laying new tile.
  • Skill with setting wall tile and repairs.
  • Ability to install Hardibacker for tile on walls and floors.
  • Ability to “Tooth Out” to repair/modify block and brick walls
  • Ability to remove/replace, install new, remodel steel doors/jambs into concrete and block walls
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials common to the Mason trade.
  • Knowledge and ability in stucco applications.
  • Estimate new construction and remodels as it relates to Mason
  • Effective and accurate communication with other trades and customers.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Asbestos abatement
  • Able to check E-mail and use the Internet.
  • Frame walls and doors with steel studs.
  • Laminate, Vinyl flooring, VCT flooring installations
  • Modify and set up new and used office furniture (Steelcase and DIRT systems)
  • Ability to hang objects to walls such as AV equipment, whiteboards, and other items.
  • Ability to operate Bobcats, reach lift, scissor lifts, one man lifts.
  • Removal of nuisance animals such as bats, bees and hornets/wasps
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Salary range begins at $41,421. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
