Position Summary

The Center for Computational Research ( CCR ) at the University at Buffalo (UB) invites applications for a programmer analyst. CCR is seeking to hire a highly motivated team-member who wishes to work in a dynamic research environment at a leading academic supercomputing center. CCR maintains high performance computing, storage, networking, and an on-premise cloud infrastructure to support the university’s research activities.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • A mix of hardware and software experience and be comfortable working in a Linux/Unix environment with both front and back-end technologies that include but are not limited to Python, PHP, JavaScript, and various data warehousing technologies.
  • This position will require a mix of physical hardware installation, troubleshooting, and repairs, software installation and maintenance in a Linux/Unix environment, and software development focusing on improving system reporting and automation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and monitor production virtual machines in the OpenStack cloud computing platform.
  • Troubleshoot and repair system hardware.
  • Install physical infrastructure servers/networking.
  • Install system software.
  • Assist with software development of tools for the monitoring and audit of CI resources.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology, Information Systems or related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in hardware troubleshooting, diagnosis and system repair.
  • Experience in working with a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Ability to build, install and maintain complex scientific software applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to create technical documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing, SQL, shell-scripting, and familiarity with programming languages such as Python.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building interactive web-based portals, developing RESTAPIs, and manipulation of structured data.
  • Preferred programming languages include Python, PHP, JavaScript, C, and C++.
  • Experience with revision control software (such as git), software test frameworks (such as pytest or phpunit) and continuous integration (CI) services (such as CircleCl or travis)
  • Experience or knowledge with Cloud computing technologies such as Openstack, Amazon web services ( AWS ), Microsoft Azul, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with manipulating and visualizing system performance data using Prometheus, Grafana, or other monitoring tools
