The Role at a Glance

As the Sr. Audit Underwriter, you will provide subject matter expertise and direction on complex underwriting audits including medical, non-medical, financial, reinsurance, legal, documentation, communication, and processing issues. You will develop and execute audits to evaluate the effectiveness of the internal controls and adherence to applicable procedures and regulations for insurance cases underwritten which may include automated underwriting processes, premium finance underwriting, and foreign national underwriting.

What you'll be doing

  • Plans and conducts audits of complex cases underwritten for assigned area(s) of responsibility.

  • Provides direction/guidance and serves as subject matter expert to internal stakeholders on a broad variety of underwriting audit matters/issues.

  • Analyzes underwriting data including medical, non-medical, financial, and reinsurance information; summarizes observations, and provides recommendations and/or training for remediation or procedural changes.

  • Prepares and maintains accurate documentation on a variety of underwriting topics and ensures integrity of all documentation produced.

  • Evaluates caseload to validate appropriate courses of action regarding underwriting requirements and determine if offer was made within approval limit.

  • Develops processes/procedures for Lab Free post-APS audits and for rescinding issued policies that are out of compliance with established internal controls.

  • Consults with appropriate internal stakeholders and management on assigned cases; takes ownership of communications regarding case to management.

  • Develops and delivers presentations for internal stakeholders (e.g., underwriting teams).

  • Develops complex reports on audit findings; identifies and evaluate trends/issues, common errors, and offers solutions.

  • Liaises with management and other resources to develop consistent dashboard reporting capabilities.

  • Represents Lincoln at industry/meetings, acquires underwriting intelligence, shares information internally.

  • Collaborates with appropriate internal stakeholders (e.g., Underwriting and other departments) to select profitable risks.

  • Effectively and efficiently manages the audit process for assigned caseloads, including changing priorities as needed and being open to different approaches/views on underwriting issues.

  • Identifies and communicates different and new alternatives to improve process and/or underwriting approach.

  • Carries out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines. Complies with all company and site policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as required

What we’re looking for

Must haves:

  • 5 - 7+ Years of Individual Life Underwriting experience -- $10million or higher Approval limit preferred

  • 2+ years of experience with automated underwriting systems

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's)

Nice to haves:

  • Confident, comfortable communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong presentation skills with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of management through clear, informed and logical discussions/presentations.

  • Ability to analyze complex information and to evaluate the implications of a course of action or solution.

  • Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Evaluate trends in data or information.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and recommend processes improvements.

  • Demonstrated strong relationship management skills with internal clients (e.g. senior management, peers and colleagues); proven ability to develop creative and collaborative approaches.

  • Demonstrates strong project management leadership skills including, critical ability to coordinate and balance multiple projects in a time-sensitive environment, under pressure, and meeting deadlines.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
