Job Description

MU International Programs seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and highly energetic professional to serve as Study Abroad Advisor.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Study Abroad, the Study Abroad Advisor is a key member of the study abroad team and will play an active role in our mission, “to provide transformative global learning experiences for MU students.”

This is an entry level position in the rewarding field of international education with great opportunities for professional development.

This student-facing role will contribute to student service areas including:

- Student recruitment
- Holistic student support and advising
- Programming and outreach for in person and virtual events

This is an exciting time to join the Mizzou Study Abroad team. MU has successfully re-opened study abroad programs during COVID-19, and our team recently developed a new vision, mission, and values: https://international.missouri.edu/studyabroad/about/vision-mission-and-values/

Study Abroad Advising & Recruitment duties:
- Work closely with Study Abroad enrollment management team to actively recruit study abroad participants and accelerate their application completion.
- Advise about assigned MU-approved study abroad programs in assigned regional locations.
- Work with assigned academic departments to identify and promote specific study abroad opportunities for students in these majors. Provide initial study abroad advising for students in their assigned majors.
- Provide individual and group advising for students about academic and personal goals, program selection, the application process, policies and procedures, finances, cultural adaptation and health and safety issues.
- Develop budgets for assigned MU study abroad programs. Coordinates admissions process for all assigned study abroad programs.
- Advise students about regulations for obtaining a student visa and assist students with obtaining necessary official documentation, as needed.
- Conduct information sessions, orientations and post-program debriefings.
- Work cooperatively with faculty and other administrative offices/units on campus.
- Represent MU to U.S. and overseas colleagues for assigned MU study abroad programs.

Inclusive Excellence Coordination & Support duties:
- Establish collaborative relationships with key campus partners and student organizations to increase abroad participation of underrepresented students.
- Enthusiastically serve on the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access study abroad committee.
- Advise for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships.
- Assist with other International Center special projects and administrative tasks as assigned.

Other duties:
  • Assist faculty led program coordinators with administrative support.
  • Lead re-entry programming activities
  • Assist with study abroad retention initiatives
  • All other duties as assigned.

Salary

Salary Range: $15.29-18.38/hour

GGS Grade: 7

University Title: STUDENT SUPPORT SPECIALIST II

M-F: 8am - 5pm

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

• The successful candidate will be an excellent team player and a high achieving individual contributor with a strong internal drive to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
• Excel at multi-tasking by balancing multiple priorities and deadlines with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective communication skills with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
• Experience advising students utilizing a student-centered approach.
• Strong commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity
• International experience through study, work, living or volunteering abroad.
• Ability to speak more than one language
• Familiarity with the Terra Dotta software for study abroad
