The role you’ll contribute:
Britain Development is an early intervention program for children from birth through six years of age with special needs.
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) will support children with diagnosed or suspected visual impairments and their families through assessment, consultation, and direct instruction. The TVI provides expertise in how the child’s visual impairment affects the child’s development, ability to access the environment, and engage in childhood activities.
S/he is accountable for practicing within the parameters of the Kansas Department of Education, and all regulatory standards and established policies, protocols, and procedures.
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired demonstrates leadership/management skills and a commitment to professional accountability and growth. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired serves as a role model for the mission, vision and values of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.
The value you’ll bring to the team:
Conduct functional vision assessments of children with diagnosed visual impairments or suspected visual impairments
Provide consultative services to the child’s family to offer strategies that can be utilized at home, in therapy, or in the classroom as it relates to the child’s visual needs
Collaborate with the child’s therapy services team (physical, occupational, speech-language and music therapists, BCBA and behavior technicians) to ensure the child’s visual needs are addressed during treatment
Collaborate with child’s educational services team (Early Childhood Special Education teacher and paraprofessionals) to ensure the child’s visual needs are addressed during classroom activities
Collaborate with the child’s medical services team (physician, nurse, social work) to ensure that the child’s visual needs are addressed, additional medical referrals are made, and assist in helping the family access community resources available to children with visual impairments
Assess the environment at the center to ensure safety and optimal visual development for individual children with visual impairments
Select and/or adapt materials/toys/environment or instruct others on methods of adapting materials/toys/environment to meet the individual visual needs of the child
Provide direct instruction to the child as needed to help the child develop needed visual skills
Train and educate students, interns, volunteers, staff and family members
Maintain a professional team relationship with co-workers by being considerate of workloads, assisting with duties, and being supportive toward their continued growth.
Communicate honestly and confront issues and problems in a private setting
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
- Minimum qualifications : Master’ Degree in Education, Kansas Teaching License or Provesional License for Teacher of the Visually Impaired (PRK-12)
