Position Summary

The Technology Applications Engineer will have the responsibility to guide and assist in the engineering activities of the Cooperative by applying technical knowledge, sound engineering judgment, and skill, to insure that the electrical system meets the present and future requirements and is rendering safe, efficient, and dependable service to its Member/owners at the lowest possible cost. Applies and provides recommendations to the Cooperative of current and future technologies for the distribution system, smart grid system, renewable energy designs, and engineering planning systems. Plans and directs analysis of complex engineering and business problems to be solved by the Cooperative considering applicable regulations.

Duties and responsibilities

Including the following (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Participates in the development of the Cooperative s technologies and procedures as they relate to engineering and design and makes recommendations on any needed changes to insure that they are current.
  • Monitors and reviews the SCADA system, the related communications network, and suggests network and infrastructure improvements. Provides guidance and/or assistance in the maintenance, upgrade, and integration of the Distribution Energy Management System and makes recommendations to the Manager of Engineering for future plans for expansion and integration of these systems; insures that the Cooperative is represented in the associated User Group.
  • Works closely with other Engineers, to set priorities in the dissemination of technological equipment, evaluation and analysis, and reporting for needed modification or additions, and seeks approval of any amendments.
  • Researches, analyses, and recommends new technologies and their integration into the electric power grid, including smart grid equipment, commercial and residential electric vehicle charging equipment, energy conservation and metering devices, distributed generation, etc.
  • Manages projects and schedules for smart grid applications and renewable energy topics and create new business development initiatives.
  • Reviews current renewable energy designs and manufacturing processes to determine limitations to meet program requirements, assess alternative approaches where needed, and determines the most accurate, feasible, and economical solutions with stakeholders.
  • Utilizes a variety of engineering planning and designing software (Milsoft, NISC EA, and AutoCAD), increasing the reliability of the power grid. Prepares, presents, and recommends changes to all plans and studies relating to system protection, device coordination, and distributed energy resources.
  • Works closely with the optical fiber communications group for a smooth integration of next generation grid devices in the SCADA or related network, determines and applies all current technologies for fault location, isolation and restoration (FLISR) and conservation voltage reduction (CVR), and makes recommendations for future extensions.
  • Responsible for assisting the Manager of Engineering in budgets and special projects for the department.
  • Cordially and efficiently handle and assist others in dealing with member/employee questions and complaints.
  • Represent the Cooperative at organizations and in meetings at the local, state, and national levels where objectives of the Cooperative can be served.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.) or Electrical Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T) is required.

A minimum of (3) years engineering experience in an electric utility system, is required.

Experience in electric power system, associated SCADA/engineering software, and renewable energy is preferred.

Must have valid Texas driver s license and related insurance.

Working conditions

Work primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Working under time sensitive schedules and stressful deadlines should be expected. Tobacco free, professional office environment. Some irregular hours that include nights, weekends and holidays may be necessary. May require fieldwork. Irregular hours including overtime, weekends, holidays and nights when needed to complete a job or if the work load demands it. Travel to and from jobs. Be subject to working trouble calls when needed. Traveling outside the service area and overnight travel, when required.

Physical requirements

Sedentary, sitting, walking, and lift or move items up to 25 pounds to a height that can be done safely and without injury, bending, frequent near vision use for reading and computer use; frequent stressful conditions (cardiovascular).
