Description of Work

As of June 1, 2023, the new salary range will be $36,682 - $64,194.

This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Anson County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt, and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices

  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew

  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions are required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils. Visual acuity is required. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required. Must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Must be able to obtain/ maintain a valid inmate card. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card, applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement:

Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 180-day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 360 days to obtain a License.
